Within each tooth, there is a core, which is comprised of nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic tissues and connective tissues. This “pulp” or “dentin” is what supplies nutrients to the tooth and transmits sensation including pain. When this area becomes painful, usually due to infection, it requires endodontic therapy, or therapy of the root canal.
